“Top of the World” symbolises the ever spinning of our earth, like a top. It also reflects the pinnacle of human achievement in science, medicine and technology, ahead of any other living species on earth. Yet, this progress comes at a cost. Our dependence on fossil fuels, excessive use of plastics, monoculture farming and surging population growth have contributed to the unbalanced state of our earth. Still, life still goes on, the planet keeps turning, but its fate will be shaped by the choices we make now.
A suspended occasional table in teak, featuring removable quadrant box drawers with Tamo ash veneered fronts and brass pulls. The coopered cabinet doors are fitted with brass hinges and sculpted pulls. This piece is suspended by steel wire with an ebony end cap.
This work explores the challenge of suspending a functional piece of furniture from the ceiling. Its weight and balance demanded precise consideration, especially in the design of quadrant drawers. Each drawer removal causes the whole form to tilt, threatening the others to slip out. Internal magnets provide the countermeasure, securing balance within instability. The piece becomes a study of subtraction, gravity, and the fine line between control and collapse.
Technical notes: The curved drawer fronts were made by laminating multiple sheets of wood veneers in a form. Each piece of the coopered doors had to be shaped individually to achieve the curve I wanted. The brass fittings were hand-shaped and made to fit the drawers and the doors.
