Composition is an ongoing series of small panel works made from wood veneers. Each piece uses the natural grain, colour, and reflectivity of the material as a primary visual language. Rather than following a fixed pattern, the compositions are assembled intuitively, allowing the material to guide the final arrangement.
Wood veneers are one of my favourite materials to work with. My first experience with them was making a simple chessboard. Through working with them, I quickly learnt about various species of wood and their properties. This eventually led me to learning traditional marquetry in Paris, France. From time to time, I still seem to enjoy simple geometric shapes and patterns that are led by the material themselves rather than introducing an intricate design.
